All choral compositions by Čiurlionis can be divided into three groups: original compositions with religious texts (1898-1902), harmonised and adapted folk songs (1905-09) and compositions to lyrics by Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė (1908-09).
The composer had a deep perception and a keen understanding of the origin of folk songs, their emotional link with nature and the difficult life and work of the village man.
Monotony of rhythm is one of the most important qualities of our songs and, I dare say, the most beautiful one. This monotony endows them with noble serenity, and as you listen to them longer, you start to feel their deep mysticism... There are many similar classical compositions, <...> but those melodies, genuine ancient songs born in the depths of the soul make the strongest impact on us and have the power of fascination, wrote Čiurlionis in his article About Music.

From 1995-2000 Jonas Petronis' publishing house published complete choral compositions by Čiurlionis. The latest publication is Folk Songs for Choirs that include all currently known harmonised songs by Čiurlionis, many of them published for the first time. The collection is prepared after the composer's autographs (sound scores and individual voice parts) held at Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas and J.Žilevičius and J.Kreivėnas' archives of Lithuanian musicology in Chicago. The present CD edition is recorded on the basis of this new updated collection of Čiurlionis' harmonised folk songs.

CDs featuring the JAUNA MUZIKA choir

		In 2001, the LITHUANIAN MUSICIANS UNION and UAB BALTIC OPTICAL DISC founded the Gold Disc Award, consisting of a trophy and a special CD, for the best performers of the year in four categories: an ensemble, an instrumentalist, a singer, and jazz. In 2002, a qualified jury awarded the Gold Disc to the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the singer Regina Maciūtė, the saxophonist Petras Vyšniauskas, and the JAUNA MUZIKA Vilnius Municipal Choir.

		The CD Italian Composers at the Vasa Court is a project sponsored by the Baroque Route in Lithuania, part of the Council of Europe Cultural Routes, and presents the musical legacy of this important period. The selection of music by Italian composers who worked at Vasa court was made by the cellist and viola da gamba player Darius Stabinskas. It was first performed at the Banchetto Musicale early music festival in 2000 and broadcast by Euroradio, and recorded a few years later at the Vilnius Recording Studio. This CD contains compositions by Italian composers which Lithuanian nobles listened to almost four centuries ago.

		One of the leaders of the modern school of Lithuanian composition, Balakauskas wrote his Requiem, his only religious composition, in memory of the Lithuanian diplomat and champion of national liberty, Stasys Lozoraitis, who died suddenly in 1994. Not overly preoccupied with musical fashion, Balakauskas can be described perhaps as a Lithuanian Messiaen. Unlike the monumental settings by Berlioz, Verdi, Britten or Penderecki, his Requiem is an intimate and meditative chamber work more akin to the compositional language and ethos of Taverner or Pärt. Balakauskas himself claims to have created an emphatically traditional work.
